Database Referential Integrity Management in ERP Systems

Database referential integrity management is an important activity in ERP systems where financial records, inventory transactions, customer data, supplier details, purchase orders, sales documents, and production records are linked across multiple database tables. In enterprise environments, weak referential integrity can lead to orphan records, incorrect transaction posting, duplicate master data, failed reporting, and inconsistent business processing. This article discusses how structured referential integrity management helps maintain valid relationships between parent and child tables through primary keys, foreign keys, constraints, validation rules, and controlled transaction updates. It explains the role of master data governance, database constraints, cascading rules, data validation, exception handling, and periodic integrity checks in improving ERP data reliability. The article also highlights common challenges such as legacy data migration, manual data corrections, incomplete interface loads, custom table dependencies, and weak synchronization between ERP modules. A structured integrity management approach is presented to improve data consistency, reduce transaction errors, support audit readiness, and strengthen ERP system reliability. The study concludes that effective referential integrity management improves database accuracy, supports dependable reporting, and ensures stable operation of enterprise ERP systems.
