Abstract

Heterogeneous database systems require effective data integration methods to combine information from different platforms, formats, schemas, and storage environments into a unified and usable structure. Data integration supports enterprise reporting, transaction coordination, decision-making, and interoperability across legacy systems, relational databases, cloud databases, and semi-structured data sources. Existing literature highlights schema mapping, data transformation, metadata management, middleware-based integration, federated query processing, ETL workflows, and data standardization as major approaches for heterogeneous database integration. However, many organizations still face challenges such as schema mismatch, data type conflicts, inconsistent naming conventions, duplicate records, semantic differences, synchronization delays, and weak data governance. This research is important because fragmented database environments can reduce data reliability, slow analytical processing, and create inconsistent business outputs across departments. This article discusses data integration challenges in heterogeneous database systems, focusing on structural differences, semantic conflicts, data quality issues, interoperability barriers, transformation complexity, and integration performance. The study concludes that effective integration strategies improve data consistency, reduce redundancy, strengthen cross-system communication, and support more reliable enterprise-level information management.
