Software maintenance planning is essential for business-critical systems where continuous availability, functional accuracy, security, and operational stability are required. In enterprise environments, poor maintenance planning can lead to repeated service interruptions, delayed defect correction, uncontrolled changes, outdated documentation, and increased operational risk. This article discusses how structured maintenance planning supports corrective, adaptive, perfective, and preventive maintenance activities in systems that directly support business operations. It explains the role of maintenance schedules, change request prioritization, incident records, impact analysis, resource allocation, version control, testing plans, and release coordination in maintaining system reliability. The article also highlights common challenges such as legacy code dependency, limited technical knowledge, urgent production fixes, regulatory changes, and difficulty balancing maintenance with new development work. A structured maintenance planning approach is presented to improve response time, reduce downtime, control maintenance cost, and support long-term system sustainability. The study concludes that effective maintenance planning strengthens operational continuity, improves software reliability, and supports dependable performance of business-critical systems.
