Software Defect Aging Analysis in Issue Tracking Systems

Software defect aging analysis is an important quality monitoring practice in issue tracking systems where unresolved defects must be measured based on how long they remain open. In enterprise software projects, aged defects can indicate delayed correction, unclear ownership, complex root causes, weak prioritization, or poor coordination between testing and development teams. This article discusses how defect aging analysis helps teams track open defects by severity, priority, module, assigned owner, detection phase, and release impact. It explains the role of issue logs, defect status history, escalation records, retest notes, closure dates, and aging reports in improving defect control. The article also highlights common challenges such as inactive tickets, duplicate defects, delayed retesting, incomplete root cause details, and pressure to defer unresolved issues. A structured defect aging analysis approach is presented to improve follow-up discipline, reduce defect backlog, support release decisions, and strengthen software quality management. The study concludes that effective defect aging analysis improves defect resolution efficiency, reduces release risk, and supports reliable software delivery in enterprise projects.
