Database Trigger Usage and Its Impact on System Performance

Database trigger usage is important in enterprise database systems because triggers automatically execute predefined actions when insert, update, or delete operations occur on database tables. Triggers help enforce business rules, maintain audit trails, validate data changes, update dependent records, and support automatic consistency control within relational database environments. Existing literature highlights row-level triggers, statement-level triggers, audit triggers, validation triggers, cascading update triggers, and trigger-based logging as major mechanisms for database automation. However, many systems still face challenges such as hidden processing overhead, slow transaction execution, recursive trigger behavior, locking conflicts, debugging difficulty, and reduced performance under high transaction loads. This research is important because poorly designed triggers can affect database response time, increase resource consumption, and create maintenance complexity in enterprise applications. This article discusses database trigger usage and its impact on system performance, focusing on trigger design, execution timing, transaction dependency, auditing logic, validation control, performance monitoring, and optimization practices. The study concludes that carefully designed triggers improve data integrity and automation, while excessive or poorly managed trigger logic can reduce scalability and overall database performance.
