Abstract

Flat file integration is important in ETL processing because many enterprise systems still exchange data through CSV, TXT, fixed-width, Excel, and other file-based formats. These files are commonly used for legacy system extraction, third-party data sharing, batch uploads, reporting feeds, and data warehouse loading. Existing literature highlights file parsing, delimiter handling, schema mapping, data type conversion, encoding control, validation checks, and staging-area processing as major practices in flat file integration. However, many organizations still face challenges such as inconsistent file structures, missing headers, duplicate records, incorrect delimiters, encoding errors, incomplete rows, and weak error tracking during ETL execution. This research is important because poor flat file integration can lead to failed data loads, inaccurate reporting, delayed warehouse refresh, and reduced trust in business intelligence outputs. This article discusses flat file integration challenges in ETL processing, focusing on file format standardization, data validation, schema alignment, cleansing rules, error handling, logging, and automated loading workflows. The study concludes that effective flat file integration improves ETL reliability, reduces data loading errors, strengthens data quality, and supports consistent enterprise data processing.
