Database Security Using Role-Based Access Control

Database security using role-based access control is important because enterprise databases contain sensitive business, financial, customer, employee, and operational data that must be protected from unauthorized access. Role-based access control assigns permissions according to user roles, job responsibilities, and access levels, allowing organizations to control who can view, insert, update, delete, or manage database records. Existing literature highlights user authentication, role assignment, privilege management, least-privilege access, separation of duties, audit logging, and access review as major practices for database security. However, many organizations still face challenges such as excessive user privileges, weak access monitoring, unauthorized data modification, shared accounts, insider misuse, and poor control over administrative permissions. This research is important because weak database access control can lead to data leakage, compliance failure, financial loss, and reduced trust in enterprise information systems. This article discusses database security using role-based access control, focusing on role design, permission mapping, privilege restriction, access approval workflows, audit trails, policy enforcement, and periodic access review. The study concludes that effective role-based access control improves database confidentiality, strengthens accountability, reduces security risks, and supports secure enterprise data management.
